Services for

Fair Housing

At HCS, our Fair Housing initiative includes education and outreach to groups, individuals and housing professionals to promote equal access to housing for all. We also encourage people who have been the victims of housing discrimination to take steps to have the issue addressed in accordance with the Fair Housing Act and/or the local law depending on the jurisdiction where the incident occurred.

HCS has fair housing literature available for you to distribute to your fellow residents, co-workers, your tenants, or employees.

For information about your fair housing rights and for help filing housing discrimination-complaints contact the HCS Fair Housing team at 202-667-7715 or fairhousing@housingetc.org

Fair Housing outreach and education is provided through conducting housing workshops targeting homebuyers and renters that provide information regarding fair housing and laws, disseminating fair housing literature, training sales and rental housing industry professionals (including private landlords), and by providing training on Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing to government agencies, housing providers, and community partners and stakeholders. Housing consumers will learn how to recognize and obtain remedies for discriminatory actions and would be prepared to take advantage of sales and rental housing opportunities or resolve discriminatory housing challenges.

The Fair Housing Act provides protections against housing discrimination for the following protected classes:
  • Race
  • Color
  • Religion
  • National Origin
  • Sex
  • Disability
  • Familial Status (the presence of persons under the age of 18 in a household)

HCS conducts housing workshops and webinars targeting homebuyers, renters, and housing providers that provide information regarding fair housing and laws. Upon request, our staff is available to come to your organization to conduct similar workshops.

HCS will refer instances of housing discrimination to HUD or the appropriate local fair housing enforcement agency depending on the jurisdiction where the incident occurred.
